How to Buy a Pre-Owned iPhone Safely in South Africa: A 10-Point Checklist

With new flagships starting above R30,000, more South Africans are looking at pre-owned iPhones. GeekHub’s July 2026 price analysis recommends certified pre-owned iPhones from dealers such as CellSell, PrO pre-owned and gomaxx instead of new flagships. A used phone can be a smart buy, but only if you check it properly.

The 10-point checklist

#StageCheckWhat to do
1Before meetingWarrantyPrefer a dealer with a written warranty. Certified dealers and refurbishers usually offer a return period; private sellers on classifieds sites usually do not.
2Before meetingIMEI and proof of purchaseAsk for both. The IMEI is on the box, in Settings > General > About, or by dialling *#06#. Ask your network provider whether it is reported lost or stolen.
3Before meetingPriceCompare with similar listings. A price far below them is a warning sign.
4InspectionApple ID and Find MyConfirm the phone is signed out of the previous owner’s Apple ID and Find My is off. A phone still locked to another account cannot be used properly.
5InspectionBattery healthGo to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. A low maximum capacity means a battery replacement soon.
6InspectionScreenLook for dead pixels, burn-in and cracks, and test touch across the whole display.
7InspectionCameras, speakers and microphoneRecord a short video and play it back, then make a quick call on speaker.
8InspectionFace ID or Touch ID, port and buttonsTest each one.
9InspectionModel and storageConfirm the model, storage size and colour match the listing.
10PaymentInvoice and safe paymentGet an invoice with the seller’s details, the IMEI and the warranty terms. Avoid paying cash to someone you cannot trace, and meet in a public place for private sales.

Is it worth it?

A pre-owned iPhone from a reliable dealer can cost far less than a new one and still receive software updates for years. Check Apple’s support page for your model before you buy.
